Moodle Quickstart Guide for Faculty

Best Practices for Saving Student Materials

The Course Backup file does not include uploaded papers, quiz attempts, forum posts or anything that is related to students' activities, uploads, and submissions. This type of content can be manually backed up by the course instructor on an individual activity basis.

Assignment Submission backup

To download all the submissions for a Moodle assignment, you need to access the assignment and click View all submissions:

On the top right corner of the screen of the new page, you will click Download all submissions:

Submissions are saved as a .zip archive file. Depending on the original settings, the submissions will be shown as the original files or as HTML files (if you had allowed for online text).

Turnitin Assignment backup

To back up the submissions for a Turnitin Assignment, you need to access the activity and scroll down to the submissions. There, you will select all of them and click Download

You can choose whether to download:

  • Original files (without any sort of annotation or feedback)
  • Selected Grademark Files (includes all the comments)

IMPORTANT: For Selected Grademark files, some of the inline comments will show up in the last pages.

Quiz Attempt backup

To download and save all the attempts for a quiz (including questions and answers), you have to access the quiz and click on the Attempts counter; alternatively, you can click Results on the blue horizontal navigation menu.

On the new page, in the top right drop down menu, you need to select Responses:

On the new page, you need to select both question text and response; depending on the quiz, you might need right answer, too:

Scrolling down, you will find a drop-down menu where you will choose the file type for the report:

Hit Download, save the file, and you can proceed with the next activity.

Forum backup

To export a forum, including threads, posts, and replies, you need to access the forum itself and, from the top blue navigation menu, select More and Export:

In the new page, deselect the start and end date in order to export the entire forum. For an improve readability, you can choose to remove the HTML tags and to have the dates in a readable format, rather than a timestamp, as shown below:

FAs for the other types of exportable activities, the available formats are:

  • Comma separated values (.csv)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
  • HTML table
  • JavaScript Object Notation (.json)
  • Open Document (.ods)
  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)
