Finding Books on the Shelves

The books are arranged by subject according to the Library of Congress Classification system.

The call number is made of two parts, both made of letters and numbers. The first part indicates the subject of the book, while the second part generally represents the author’s last name. The last line contains the date of publication.

Example:

BOOK TITLE:     Social character in Mexican village

AUTHOR:          Erich Fromm

CALL NUMBER:   HN113.5.F74

Read call numbers piece by piece:

  • the letters (main subject) in alphabetical order
  • the number (subject subdivision) as a whole number
  • the letter (the author) in alphabetical order
  • the following number is read as a decimal
