Required Placement Tests for incoming Freshmen

 

Placement exams for English Composition and Mathematics are required for incoming freshmen and are offered during the Degree Seeking Orientation days.

ENGLISH PLACEMENT EXAM

All incoming freshmen must take the English Composition Placement Exam to determine their entry level in the Composition Course Sequence. This exam may place you into either: EN 103 Intensive English Composition, EN 105 English Composition, or EN 110 Advanced Composition. This exam is computer based and can only be taken once. Students who miss their assigned placement exam will default into EN 103. 

Placement exams are assigned by the Registrar's Office and communicated via email. If assigned, this examination is mandatory.

Students who are exempted: any student who has received credit for one or more courses in the sequence by submitting advanced placement examination score reports and/or official college transcripts. MATH PLACEMENT EXAM

All incoming freshmen must take the Math Placement Exam to determine their entry level in the Math Course Sequence. This exam may place you into either: MA 100 Finite Math, MA 101 Algebra, MA 197 Pre-Calculus, or MA 198 CalculusThis exam is paper based and divided into two sections. The exam can only be taken once. Students who miss their assigned placement exam will default into MA 100 or MA 101

Note: Students enrolled for the Business, International Business and Marketing programs should try to complete both sections of the exam; while all other students may attempt only section 1.

Optional Placement Exam - Foreign Languages

 

All students must demonstrate foreign language proficiency equivalent to, at least, a year of study in a foreign language with written literature. 

Students that should take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam:

  • have studied one of more of these languages during their secondary education career;
  • took one or more of these languages for one semester or more;
  • learned one or more of these languages through friends/family;
  • speak the language but do not know how to write;
  • have lived in Italy, France, Germany or Spain for an extended period of time and have been extensively exposed to the foreign language.

This exam is computer based and can only be taken once. You may take this exam at any point in your academic career.

Students who are exempted: students with a national secondary education credential in a language other than English will be considered to have satisfied this requirement. 

FRENCH 

If you have already studied French and are planning to continue your study of the language, we strongly recommend that you take our online French Placement Test before enrolling in any French courses at JCU. GERMAN

If you have already studied German and are planning to continue your study of the language, we strongly recommend that you take our online Placement Test before enrolling in any German courses at JCU. ITALIAN

Students who have already taken Italian and plan to continue studying the language at John Cabot University should take the Placement Test before registering for any Italian language course.
